By Ross von Metzke

Michigan Gay Benefits Imperiled

As Michigan state employees vote on tentative contracts, a key provision of the pacts affecting same-sex couples could be null and void as a result of last week's election. Under the tentative contracts with five state unions, the same-sex domestic partner benefits would begin Oct. 1, 2005. But, David Fink, director of the Office of the State Employer, Wednesday said that the issue may be nullified.

By D'Anne Witkowski

Michigan's Governor Jennifer Granholm spoke out against Proposal 2, the so-called "marriage amendment" that will be on the Nov. 2 ballot, calling it unnecessary and saying it goes too far. If passed, said Granholm, Proposal 2 would inevitably end up in the courts.

Civil Rights Commission Calls Gay Marriage Amendment 'Hateful'

Michigan Gay Marriage Amendment Dies In Discord

A proposed amendment to the Michigan state constitution to bar same-sex marriage died after a state elections board deadlocked Monday over whether to certify petition signatures for the measure. A conservative group which collected nearly a half-million signatures was attempting to have the measure placed on the November ballot.
